That’s exactly what happened to photographer Myles Dunphy while on a trip to Fiji. The shutter on his Canon 5D Mark II huffed and puffed and then simply gave up. A quick check of the repair shop gave Dunphy a quote of $500 to get it fixed. Knowing that a replacement shutter costs only $90, Dunphy decided to have a go at it himself. The shutter assembly on a pro body is just a maintenance item and is replaceable at a fraction of the cost of the body. Even after Canon refuses to service it, other places will do so. 1DX series bodies are extremely rugged (I have a pair of 1DX II and 1DX III bodies and used 1DX and other 1 series prior) and they hold up extremely well.

Trying to decide if I should buy a used 1DX at $3,500 and risk having to replace the shutter mechanism or just buy a new one if they can find one. I had one with a lot of shutter bounce and the shutter and mirror box needed replace about 18 months ago, that cost me cost $1050. lordthundercheeks. • 1 yr. ago. Shutter replacement on a 1dx should be around $250 +/-. If you factor that in, along with a cleaning, puts you around $1600. it's not a bad deal for a 1dx mkii. It's a tank, and as long as it isn't beat up should just keep on going.
